In a war-torn society, Afghan women struggle to provide for their children. Their desire to earn a living is hampered by severe restrictions on their mobility and personal freedoms.
Through MEDA, women have an opportunity to earn income by growing produce in their kitchen gardens. Our “Through the Garden Gate” project offers agricultural training and micro-loans so women can buy seeds, tools and equipment. Kitchen gardens are ideal for Afghan women: They allow them to remain in their home compound and care for children while they work.
As their fruit and vegetable crops increase, women are able to feed their children more nutritious food, and sell the surplus for income. They can look to the future with hope.
FACT: There are some 50,000 war widows in Kabul, each supporting an average of 6 dependents.
